Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

PBS is central to how we work with people at Bethal Manna. We believe when PBS is used consistently, it can transform people's lives. That is why our staff are trained in the use of Positive Behaviour Support. It is a fundamental part of our training for all our support staff. We monitor all services to make sure people we support are benefitting from these methods throughout the time they choose to be supported by Bethal Manna.

Our team leads are involved in planning people's support packages from the referral and assessment stage, to make sure we get things right for people from the beginning. 

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive behavioural support uses a technique known as 'applied behaviour analysis. This technique essentially is used to generate an in-depth understanding of the individual in order to deliver effective person-centred support.

There is always a reason for someone’s behaviour and we carry out a full assessment to work out what it is. From there, we can develop realistic plans and strategies that will reduce the frequency of the behaviour that challenges and improve the person’s quality of life.

Applied behaviour analysis looks a little closer at the individual, their family and carers as well as any other support. Staff gain a better understanding of why a particular set of challenging behaviour traits are displayed. In some cases, there may well be some underlying mental health or physical health needs that have not been addressed. In other cases, it might be that there are particular sensory or environmental triggers that are causing these challenging behaviours.

Displaying behaviour that challenges is a way of letting people know your feelings and emotions when you don’t have the communication or social skills to do so in other ways. When practicing positive behaviour support, we start by looking at the reasons behind each individual person’s behaviour that challenges.

Identifying these factors helps the team to draw up a fully comprehensive positive behaviour support plan to ensure every individual receives the best possible support. 

What Is A Behaviour Support?

PBS is based upon the principle that if you can teach someone a more effective and more acceptable behaviour than the challenging one, the challenging behaviour will reduce. PBS suggests challenging behaviours are learned, and so are open to being changed.

PBS teaches alternative behaviour and changes the environment to support the person well. There is nothing wrong with wanting attention, to escape from a difficult situation, wanting certain items, or displaying behaviours which just feel good. PBS helps people to get the life they need by increasing the number of ways of achieving these things: for example, by developing communication skills.

PBS helps people to learn new skills. For new skills to be used regularly, they have to be more effective than challenging behaviour. We can make this happen by understanding the reasons people display challenging behaviour, and by making sure the new behaviours we want to teach are reinforced in the same way.

Positive Behaviour Support Plan

This is a plan that assists carers in building positive behaviours to replace or reduce challenging behaviours. This plan may include teaching, improved communication, increasing relationships, and using clinical interventions. A Behaviour Support Plan provides carers with a step by step guide to making sure the person not only has a great quality of life but also enables carers to identify when they need to intervene to prevent an episode of challenging behaviour.

A good behaviour support plan is based on the results of a functional assessment and uses Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) approaches. The plan contains a range of strategies which not only focus on the challenging behaviour(s) but also include ways to ensure the person has access to things that are important to them. The strategies used are referred to as Proactive Strategies and Reactive Strategies.

Proactive strategies are intended to make sure the person has got what they need and want on a day to day basis and also includes ways to teach the person appropriate communication and life skills.

Reactive strategies are designed to keep the person and those around them safe from harm. They provide a way to react quickly in a situation where the person is distressed or anxious and more likely to display challenging behaviour.

A good behaviour support plan has more Proactive strategies than Reactive ones. This helps to ensure that the focus of the plan is not just on the challenging behaviour but provides ways to support the person to have a good life, enabling the person to learn better, more effective ways of getting what they need. Behaviour Support Plans must be person centred and specific to the individual.

Behaviour Support Plans, target specific behaviours, address the purpose, function or need that the behaviours reflect.

  • Can we accommodate the behaviour?
  • Can we add supports to the environments?
  • Can we teach the member new skills, ways to communicate more effectively?

If a Behaviour Support Plan proves to be ineffective, we document the support and interventions that are ineffective and address other possibilities

At Bethal Manna, we conduct regular debriefing meetings to reflect on the incidents that occur each day. This helps us in adjusting Behaviour Support Plans to elicit the best possible outcomes. Our support plans are reviewed regularly and may be reviewed sooner if needed.
